Description: | First Baptist Church, Calvinist Baptist, signs on building: Casino, Ice Cream Soda 5 cents.
***
"This is the First Baptist Church built in 1853 at the corner of Canal, Main, and Lisbon Streets, the site of the current "Gateway Building."
When the Baptists moved to a new church in 1870 on Bates Street overlooking the city park, the Methodists took it over. Then a temperance organization had their headquarters there. Finally, it was used for commercial purposes, including a casino, as indicated in the picture. The building was torn down to make way for the Gateway Building in 1901. Gridley Barrows did not take this picture. He reproduced it from a copy in the collection of the Androscoggin Historical Society." ~ D.Hodgkin |
